Oral Care During Pregnancy

Posted .

If you’re pregnant or trying to get pregnant, then you need to remember to take very good care of your smile. Unfortunately, pregnancy can take a toll on your teeth and gums. In fact, it can create dental problems like brittle teeth, eroded teeth, and pregnancy gingivitis. So, it’s important to keep your teeth and gums in tip-top shape as you grow that little bun in your oven. To help you do so, our dentist, Dr. Ryan Ross, has some tips for you.

First, have a diligent oral hygiene routine. This should include brushing twice a day, flossing once a day, and rinsing daily. You also need to attend your six-month checkups. However, when you come to our office, make sure to mention that you’re pregnant so we can keep the baby safe during your appointment. As you care for your smile, use a soft-bristled toothbrush, fluoride toothpaste, and dental floss.

Second, care for your teeth if you have morning sickness. The acid in the vomit can attack the teeth and wear down the enamel, making them prone to tooth decay and other dental issues. So, after you throw up, please rinse your mouth with water and wait 30 minutes to brush your teeth.
