Tips on How to Help Your Teen Have Strong Dental Health

Posted .

Do you want your teen to have a strong oral health? If so, there are things you can do to help them achieve that goal. In fact, you can consider teen oral care a two-person job, especially if your teen has braces. Your teen needs your help to keep their teeth and gums in tip-top shape. To help you help your child, our dentist, Dr. Ryan Ross, has some tips and recommendations for you.

First, encourage your teen to clean their smile regularly by brushing twice a day, flossing once a day, rinsing daily, and attending their dental checkups twice a year. To help your teen do these things, keep plenty of oral hygiene tools at their disposal, like soft-bristled toothbrushes, fluoride toothpaste, and easy-to-use floss or flossing sticks.

Second, set a good example for your teen. You can do so by taking care of your teeth and gums as well. If your teen sees you care for your smile, they might feel inspired to do the same. They might also learn that oral hygiene is important for everyone—not just them—which might help them have top-notch oral hygiene in the future as well.

Third, keep your house free of junk food. Junk food can promote dental problems, like enamel erosion and tooth decay. It’s better to have tooth-healthy foods around the house for your teen to eat, like dairy products, fruits, and vegetables.
